Lil Wayne's new album "Tha Carter IV" topped the charts with almost a million copies sold in the first week.

Lil Wayne has a lot to celebrate. His new album, “Tha Carter IV” shot up to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, moving 964,000 copies in its first week (according to Nielsen SoundScan) which was more than enough to debut at number one.  This is the best performance of a hip-hop album since Lil Wayne’s 2008 effort, “The Carter III” which moved 1.01 million copies in its first seven days. As if that wasn't impressive enough, 362 Cheap Tattoo Kits,000 copies of “Tha Carter IV” were downloaded which makes it the second largest digital sales week of all time. 

Lil Wayne’s efforts are eclipsed only by Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” which sold 1.11 million copies in its first week and moved 662,000 digital copies.  This figure is a little bit deceptive, however, since Gaga’s digital sales were likely boosted by the fact that they were offered at a discounted price of 99 cents for the first two days. 

It’s not surprising that “The Carter IV” has performed as well as it has. His single “How to Love,” which features pure vocals and Wayne’s emotional side, has become something of an anthem this summer and his performance on the MTV Video Music Awards generated a lot of buzz.

With this much success in its first week, it’s likely that we’ll be hearing a lot more from “Tha Carter IV” in the months to come.
